Sasha Calle’s Supergirl future is currently uncertain as James Gunn and Peter Safran continue figuring out the future of the DC Universe.

The Flash is set to introduce audiences to a new version of Supergirl, with rising actress Sasha Calle bringing the DC Comics icon to life. However, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran do not yet know if Calle is reprising the role for the recently-announced Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie.

“We’re figuring it all out. We don’t know yet,” the two said during the DC Universe slate presentation. “We’re pretty far away from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”

Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is expected to serve as the basis for the DC Universe movie, with James Gunn and Peter Safran teasing a “a very different type” of Kara Zor-El. The two explained: “We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, vs. Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life.”

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie is also not expected to have any connections to the Arrowverse series starring Melissa Benoist. The Supergirl series made its debut on CBS before moving to The CW for five more seasons, with the last one ending in March 2021.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
