Despite reports, set photos, and even videos revealing Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff for Marvel’s standalone Black Widow movie, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige won’t confirm the yet-to-be-announced movie is actually happening.
Speaking with Comicbook.com, Kevin Feige was asked point blank about the long-awaited standalone film featuring Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow when he declined the opportunity to speak about the project:
“Have we announced that movie yet? Who knows what that is?”
When asked, Kevin Feige acknowledged the existence of the photos — which first revealed Scarlett Johansson on set in Norway — but reiterated his reasoning for why Marvel is holding back from dishing on their plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe post phrase three:
“You sort of look at those pictures and can guess. But what it is, and where it is, and how it is, goes in that post-Far From Home release territory. We’re still, as I’ve said for the better part of a year or two, we’re waiting for Endgame and Far From Home to come out before we talk about what’s next, officially. We’re almost there.”
While Kevin Feige is doing his best to remain tight-lipped regarding the future of the MCU after Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios is rumored to be returning to Hall H this year at San Diego Comic-Con, after skipping out on their big panel at the event last year. In addition to Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow movie, other known future projects from Marvel Studios include a Shang-Chi standalone film, the Black Panther sequel that Ryan Coogler is returning to write and direct, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from writer/director James Gunn, and The Eternals, which Marvel has tapped Chloe Zhao to direct from a script written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.
As for the Black Widow film starring Scarlett Johansson, plot details remain under wraps, however, the film is expected to feature events set prior to the Scarlett Johannson’s debut as Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2. Cate Shortland (Lore) is directing the project centered on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular female character from a script written by Ned Benson and Jac Schaeffer.
In addition to Scarlett Johansson, the cast also includes Stranger Things star David Harbour, along with Florence Pugh (Fighting with my Family), and O-T Fagbenle. Rachel Weisz has been reported to be circling what is being described as a “key role” in the project.
