Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is returning as Captain America in the upcoming New World Order, but fans are curious as to whether he will be reuniting with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes.

Sam and Bucky were last seen joining forces in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney Plus, which saw Sam taking up the mantle of Captain America for the first time. Now Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is set to lead the MCU’s fourth Captain America movie, while Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier is due to appear in Thunderbolts.

Given the characters’ time spent working as partners in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and the close connection to the Captain America legacy they both share, fans have wondered whether they might team up again in New World Order. Sebastian Stan has teased the answer to that question.

Captain America & The Winter Soldier Part Ways

Speaking to ET Online at D23 Expo, Sebastian Stan responded to the question of whether Bucky Barnes would be appearing in Captain America: New World Order.

The actor joked about needing “some time from Anthony [Mackie],” suggesting he won’t be appearing in the fourth Captain America installment. This means New World Order will be the first Captain America film not to feature Stan as Bucky.

In response to the question of his involvement in New World Order, Sebastian Stan said:

“I need some time from Anthony [Mackie], because I need to sort of find my way back to me. I know he has a lot of separation anxiety as we speak, but I tried to reassure him that I’ll be okay.”

Bucky’s absence from the upcoming Captain America film isn’t too surprising, given that it is set to release shortly before Thunderbolts, in which Sebastian Stan will be appearing alongside Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes was last seen in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Here is the synopsis for the series:

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, the series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent. Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills, and Carl Lumbly also appear.

The Falcon and The Winter Solider is currently available to stream on Disney Plus. Captain America: New World Order will release in theaters on May 3, 2024 while Thunderbolts will release on July 26, 2024.  Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming MCU releases, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
