Concept art from Captain America: The Winder Solider shows off alternate and unused designs for Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier mask.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been six years since Marvel Studios introduced us to Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Directed by the Russo Brothers, the second Captain America film was revered for its brisk action sequences, game-changing narrative that had major ramifications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its titular villain in Sebastian Stan. Since then, Bucky Barne’s villainous counterpart has tempered his evil tendencies and has pretty much ditched the terrifying mask he used to sport for his missions.
With a character as prominent as The Winter Soldier, concept artists must have created hundreds of different designs for his mask. While we won’t be able to see everything Marvel Studios cooked up for the character, Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development, revealed unique unused designs for Sebastian Stan’s mask from the Captain America film on Instagram. Be sure to swipe right to see all of the unused mask designs from the second Captain America film.
The most prominent mask design is the one that gives Sebastian Stan’s character goggles. The Marvel character barely rocked his goggles so having them be more prominent would have been an interesting choice for the Captain America film. We mostly got to see Sebastian Stan’s character wear the mask in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the villain quickly came to terms with his brainwashing and became embraced by the Avengers before being snapped by Thanos.
