Secret Invasion is set to be a story about Nick Fury against a world out to get him. A new featurette from USA Today shows off just how powerless he is against the looming threat of the Skrulls.
Nick Fury’s power has never come from his ability to see through time or become immortal (though he has had both in the comics). His power has always come from his influence and intelligence. However, having been off-world for some time, Fury returns to a world infested with Skrulls that he’s powerless to stop. Brand new footage from Secret Invasion shows off Fury returning to the spy game to take down the threat and rekindle his relationships with characters such as Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes; all while Skrulls show exactly how far they’ll go to stop him.
The full featurette can be seen below:
In the original Secret Invasion comics, much of the paranoia stemmed from not knowing which of fans’ favorite superheroes might be aliens in disguise. While the show promises a true to form spy thriller, it appears to miss some of the stakes by only including one Avenger in the form of Don Cheadle’s War Machine. The show has a lot of ground to cover to rebuild that tension, though it seems to be off to a thrilling start!
How Marvel is adapting Secret Invasion
Secret Invasion is based on the comic book storyline of the same name, which was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu . The story revolves around a group of Skrulls, an alien race that has the ability to shape-shift and take on the appearance of anyone they want. The Skrulls have infiltrated Earth’s society and are secretly replacing key figures with their own kind in order to take over the planet.
The Secret Invasion comic book event was a huge success and is widely regarded as one of the best Marvel storylines of all time. The Disney Plus series is being led by Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, focusing on the aftermath of the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home and other Marvel projects.
The full Secret Invasion cast also includes Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, Emilia Clarke as G’iah, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. Olivia Colman, Dermot Mulroney, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, Carmen Ejogo and Charlayne Woodard are also on board in undisclosed roles.
