Secret Invasion is already serving as a large departure from the comics it was based on, introducing dozens of brand new ideas for the Skrulls and Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. However, according to the show’s director, those ideas were limited by what fit into Kevin Feige’s grand plan for the MCU.
The latest Marvel Studios series on Disney Plus, Secret Invasion holds a tentalizing promise in the premise that any MCU character could have been a Skrull this entire time. It’s an idea that can not only shake up the future of the MCU, but completely recontextualize the past. While talking about this idea with ScreenRant, director Ali Selim was asked if there were any limits on what he could do in the series. He said that, while all ideas were on the table, some were killed because of Kevin Feige’s larger Marvel plans:
“I guess that’s a question for Kevin Feige, but all ideas were on the table,” Selim explained. “All ideas were good. Some ideas were less good. And some ideas were killed because Kevin has a plan going down the road, and I’m not sure what that plan is. We had free rein until it didn’t make sense for story.”
While it may sound limiting when said outloud, Kevin Feige shutting down ideas for not fitting in his MCU plan is fairly standard for any showrunner or producer on a long-standing series of films. Though given Secret Invasion takes place in such an isolated corner of the Marvel Universe, it’s not clear what ideas may have affected Feige’s larger plans for the Multiverse Saga.
How Marvel is adapting Secret Invasion
Secret Invasion is based on the comic book storyline of the same name, which was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu . The story revolves around a group of Skrulls, an alien race that has the ability to shape-shift and take on the appearance of anyone they want. The Skrulls have infiltrated Earth’s society and are secretly replacing key figures with their own kind in order to take over the planet.
The full Secret Invasion cast also includes Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, Emilia Clarke as G’iah, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. Olivia Colman, Dermot Mulroney, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, Carmen Ejogo and Charlayne Woodard are also on board in undisclosed roles.
