Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is reportedly in talks to helm Marvel’s Spider-Man 4. Following the success of Shang-Chi and his involvement in other upcoming Marvel projects, Cretton has emerged as a leading candidate to direct the next installment in the Spider-Man franchise, starring Tom Holland.
Cretton’s potential involvement would mark another major collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, continuing the successful partnership that brought the previous Spider-Man films to life. Although details about the plot and release date of Spider-Man 4 remain under wraps, Cretton’s direction could signal a fresh take on the character’s next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as his last three outings were overseen by Jon Watts.
Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed Cretton’s involvement, and negotiations are still ongoing. However, his strong track record with Shang-Chi and other Marvel projects positions him as a key choice to lead Spider-Man 4, further expanding his role in the MCU’s evolving landscape after his work on the upcoming Disney Plus series Wonder Man, led by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
When does Spider-Man 4 begin shooting?
Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are returning for Spider-Man 4, with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal producing. According to reports, the film is moving forward quickly, with plans to begin shooting early next year as Marvel pushes ahead with its next installment in the series.
The Spider-Man films led by Tom Holland have become a billion-dollar franchise, with Spider-Man: No Way Home earning close to $2 billion since its release in December 2021. The movie, which also featured Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their Spider-Man roles, was a huge success, attracting audiences back to theaters during the pandemic.
Outside of Spider-Man 4, Destin Daniel Cretton is currently involved with other projects, including a live-action Naruto adaptation and a Shang-Chi sequel. It’s uncertain how his potential involvement with the new Spider-Man film will affect those commitments.
