Is Shang-Chi finally getting a sequel? A rumor suggests that the MCU’s hidden gem may soon be getting a spin-off series that nobody expected.
In an era of underperformances and disappointments, Shang-Chi stands as one of the few true triumphs in the MCU’s recent past. This has led many to wonder why it hasn’t gotten a sequel yet. The real answer is that director Destin Daniel Cretton has just been busy, previously helming Avengers: Kang Dynasty before being switched to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
However, is it possible that his newfound responsibilities have left him unable (or unwilling) to do a proper sequel for Shang-Chi? Chances are: not really. A rumor from Alex Perez at the Cosmic Circus suggests that the director still has plans to helm a sequel to the film, although details on when that would happen remain sparse.
A Shang-Chi Spin-Off Series
However, it seems as though that a sequel isn’t the only thing Marvel wants to do with the Shang-Chi brand. Reportedly, the studio also wants to create a spin-off series focused on the Ten Rings. Yet it won’t be the Ten Rings organization fans saw in Shang-Chi. Rather, it’ll be an anthology series focused on the organization throughout the MCU’s timeline.
“Marvel Studios is interested in developing a Ten Rings project similar to Eyes of Wakanda. From an idea that I heard, though, different from how Eyes of Wakanda was executed, they want to show how the organization has gone on through the ages and has influenced the events of the MCU from the very beginning. It would have had the organization interact with characters throughout history, including the Eternals, The Red Room, WW2, and modern MCU events.”
A spin-off series focused on the Ten Rings could certainly be interesting, especially if it’s given the care of animation that Eyes of Wakanda was given. Either way, it seems as though the lack of Shang-Chi content was a temporary lull rather than a continued pattern, with a sequel likely kicking off a long line of projects for that corner of the universe.
