A new rumor claims that Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will shoot scenes in Malta.
This rumor comes courtesy of Murphy’s Multiverse. Much of the production on Shang-Chi will be held in studios in Australia as well as on-location in Vietnam. Charles Murphy previously reported that Hong Kong was also a location for scenes to be shot, but due to the ongoing protests and civil unrest continuing to grow there, Marvel found an alternate location in Malta.
If Charles Murphy’s rumor is to be believed, Malta is an interesting place to film certain sequences if Hong Kong is an unlikely option for Shang-Chi. With Malta’s location in the Mediterranean being a central strategic location for various wars throughout history as well as the growth of Chinese heritage and its cultural influence on it over the last two decades, it is possible that Malta can provide an interesting narrative to the story and setting of Shang-Chi.
What do you make of this rumor? If it’s true, what kind of sequences do you think will be showcased in Malta? Introduced in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973, Shang-Chi is a skilled martial artist who was raised in an isolated compound located in China and trained by his father Fu Manchu, a Chinese crimelord and immortal sorcerer who repeatedly attempted to conquer the world. When Shang-Chi was finally allowed to venture into the outside world to do his father’s bidding, he learned about his father’s evil ways and faked his own death before embarking on a mission to take down Fu Manchu’s criminal empire.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released in theaters on February 12, 2021.
