Is Deadpool 4 coming sooner than fans think? Director Shawn Levy speaks on a potential sequel as he reflects the legacy of making the recent blockbuster bombshell.

Deadpool and Wolverine was one of the most successful films that Marvel has had in recent years. A large chunk of that, even if some fans are remiss to admit it, comes from director Shawn Levy and his ability to wrangle the dozens of loose threads tied into the final product. But with how many threads came to a close in the film, fans have been wondering if there’s even any space for a sequel.

Shawn Levy recently spoke about the concept of storytelling and the art of the sequel in a discussion with Kevin McCarthy. During the chat, the director remarked that Deadpool and Wolverine wasn’t created in a vacuum. Like many of the best sequels in history, it was actually based on the legacy of dozens of films that came before.

“I’m a fan of a lot of threes in the trilogies of movies,” he explained. “I love Back to the Future 3. I love Return of the King. [Avengers: Endgame was] such a superior audience experience. [It] took 10 years and how many movies to earn that ‘On your left.'”

“And to Fox to Marvel, when you are telling a story that has the benefit of legacy connection between the audience and the characters, you’re sort of like on second base already. When I look at Deadpool & Wolverine, that became a love letter to that legacy. We were also able to tap into years of legacy storytelling.”

When Is Deadpool 4 Coming Out?

Given Shawn Levy was the director of Deadpool and Wolverine, the topic of a potential Deadpool 4 was obviously broached during the discussion. While Levy didn’t come out and say that he wants to make a sequel, he did admit that he’s openly exploring the topic, even if he’s not sure what exactly it would look like at this time.

“I don’t know about rule of threes, ’cause the truth is, as I contemplate, for instance, ‘Okay, how do we make another Deadpool movie?’ Sequels are hard. They are dauntingly hard. I made three Night at the Museum movies. It kicked my ass every time. And so, yeah, having seen how the sausage of sequels is made, I find the whole subject a little stressful because you want to get it right.”

The success of Deadpool and Wolverine makes the prospect of a sequel a double-edged sword. One one hand, there’s clearly and audience for it and the project will likely be a box office success. On the other hand, expectations for the director to deliver something even better are high. So it seems that, if Deadpool 4 is to materialize, it likely won’t be until Shawn Levy cracks a truly next level concept.

Deadpool and Wolverine is now streaming on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
