‘Shazam! 2’ Director Hilariously Rejects HBO Max Release Idea

Sorry, HBO Max.

Shazam Family Zachary Levi Fury of the Gods Marvel Family

Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg has some thoughts for those who think the sequel should debut on HBO Max.

The wait for Shazam! Fury of the Gods just feels longer and longer. Though the film has wrapped up production, the sequel to 2019 DC darling won’t hit cinemas until later next year. Why is the film taking so long to release? A theory from Twitter user ViewerAnon suggests that the film is directly tied to the events of The Flash, which is set to practically rewrite the DC Extended Universe.

ViewerAnon continued by theory by suggesting that the entire upcoming DC slate is in a “logjam” due to the importance The Flash holds over the larger DC universe. The Twitter user then went on to suggest a brand new release strategy for the upcoming films, with Shazam! Fury of the Gods moving from cinemas to HBO Max.

Why should Shazam! Fury of the Gods move straight to streaming? The theorist believes it would be more beneficial for the franchise as the first film wasn’t exactly a commercial beast. Seeing as the theory picked up some steam on Twitter, director David F. Sandberg chimed in with a hilarious GIF.

Though David F. Sandberg doesn’t deny the theory, it;’s highly unlikely that the film will hit HBO Max considering audiences have already been conditioned to see Shazam! as a big-screen hero. As for how the film ties into The Flash? Only time will tell what the future holds for the DCEU, but it would definitely be exciting to see the interconnected nature of the franchise get spruced up.

Here is the official synopsis for Zachary Levi’s first outing as Shazam! :

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.

Shazam! is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Fury of the Gods will hit theaters on June 2, 2023.
