‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Box Office Tracking Suggests Modest Opening Weekend

Bad news for Shazam!

Shazam Fury of the Gods Zachary Levi

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to hit theaters in a few weeks, but things are not looking good for the DC Universe movie. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that early box office projections for the film suggest that it may have a more subdued opening weekend than its predecessor.

According to Hollywood insiders with access to early tracking data, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently projected to earn between $35 million to $40 million during its opening weekend in North America. The projections are being made by NRG, a leading research firm in Hollywood that tracks movie box office performance.

While these numbers may seem low compared to the $53.5 million that the first Shazam! film earned during its opening weekend in April 2019, THR adds that some box office analysts are more optimistic about the potential gross of Fury of the Gods. They believe that the sequel could match the success of the first film, which went on to earn over $364 million worldwide.

David F. Sandberg recently announced that Shazam! Fury of the Gods has already been completed ahead of its March release. The synopsis reads as follows: “Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.”

In addition to Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are also currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies set to hit theaters this year. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DC Universe? Only newly-named DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran Safran know.
