She-Hulk director Kat Coiro has responded to those who are critical of the titular character’s less bulky design.
Earlier this year, Marvel Studios released the first trailer for its upcoming Disney Plus series, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. While the overall tone of the show was praised there were two aspects of it that people took issue with. The first was that the visual effects looked very bad. The second was that the character had a body that was more athletic than bulky.
The Director Talks Body Type
In the past, She-Hulk director Kat Coiro has addressed the body-type sentiments. During the show’s Television Critics Association’s press tour panel, the director once again addressed the decision to make the character athletic as opposed to bulky:
“In terms of the CGI being critiqued, I think that has to do with our culture’s belief in its ownership of women’s bodies. I think a lot of the critique comes from feeling like they’re able to tear apart the CGI woman. There’s a lot of talk about her body type and we based it on Olympian athletes and not bodybuilders. But I think if we had gone the other way, we would be facing the same critique. I think it’s very hard to win when you make women’s bodies.”
It is worth noting that the issue that is being discussed is completely separate from the quality of the CGI and the treatment of visual effects artists. In fact, the cast and crew stated that they stood in solidarity with the people behind the effects. Whether or not changes will be made to the industry, however, is another matter altogether.
Here is the synopsis for She-Hulk:
