She-Hulk director Kat Coiro has addressed the criticisms of the CGI seen in the Disney Plus series’ trailer.
Back in May, Marvel revealed the first trailer for its upcoming Disney Plus series, She-Hulk. Reactions to the trailer were decidedly mixed with many criticizing the CGI in the trailer. Rumors of post-production issues for the show have been floating around the internet for months with the latest reports revealing that Marvel wanted the character to be less muscular. Now one of the show’s directors, Kat Coiro, has discussed the CGI issues in the trailer but in a rather dodgy way.
The Director Addresses the Response
While speaking to SFX Magazine via GamesRadar, Kat Coiro discussed the design of the character, insinuating that the reaction to it was less about the quality of the CGI and more about the fact that we’ve never seen a character quite like this before:
“I think a lot of the reactions have to do with the fact that she is so different than anything we’ve seen. When you think of Thanos or Hulk, they have a grisliness and a harshness and a bulkiness to them that is just so different. And when you just see a little pop of her, it’s almost shocking because we haven’t seen it before.”
The response to the CGI criticism happens to fall into a very interesting moment for Marvel Studios. In recent months fans have become more vocal about the various films’ lackluster effects work. Most recently, VFX artists have called out the studio for terrible working conditions which have prompted some to flat out leave the industry and/or refuse to work for the studio. How this will continue to affect She-Hulk and the rest of the MCU remains to be seen.
