The second episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law included a major twist for Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, which may be laying the foundations for an MCU World War Hulk adaptation.
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW EPISODE 2 FOLLOW!
Marvel fans were left wondering whether She-Hulk might be teasing a World War Hulk film or series when a spaceship from the planet Sakaar showed up in the first episode. Episode 2 doubles down on the tease when the ship reappears in a surprising moment.
Importantly for She-Hulk, the moment leaves Jennifer Walters having to stand on her own as her cousin Bruce Banner is taken out of the picture. However, the reason for Bruce’s absence could have huge implications for his – and the MCU’s – future.
Hulk Returns To Sakaar
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law‘s second episode confirms Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner is taking some time away from Earth to revisit the planet Sakaar.
During a phone call with Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters, Bruce says he won’t be returning to Los Angeles for a while, as something has come up. The camera then zooms out to reveal he is aboard the Sakaaran ship previously glimpsed in the first episode.
Hulk was last seen on Sakaar in Thor: Ragnarok, where he was a gladiatorial champion on the planet ruled by Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster. That film adapted elements of the Planet Hulk storyline, which led into World War Hulk in the comics.
Several key elements of Planet Hulk that paved the way for World War Hulk – such as Hulk starting a family on Sakaar – did not make it into Thor: Ragnarok. This could mean the MCU’s World War Hulk will be a very different story from its comic book counterpart, or may simply suggest that Marvel is about to reveal a lot more about Hulk’s time on Sakaar that wasn’t shown in Ragnarok.
If She-Hulk is setting up a World War Hulk adaptation, it may also herald the end of “Smart Hulk” and the return of the original Hulk. Maybe returning to Sakaar, where he was happier than he was on Earth, will see Hulk choosing to return.
