‘She-Hulk’ Writer Reveals Her Original Marvel Pitch For ‘Black Widow’

She-Hulk was still set to appear.

She-Hulk Black Widow Marvel MCU Jessica Gao

Jessica Gao, head writer of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, has revealed she previously pitched Marvel a Black Widow movie, which still would have featured Jennifer Walters.

Jessica Gao has helmed Marvel’s courtroom comedy She-Hulk for Disney Plus. The series introduces Tatiana Maslany to the MCU as Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, who refuses to let being turned into a hulk distract her from her legal career.

Now Gao has revealed she originally planned to introduce She-Hulk to the MCU in a very different way, having the character appear alongside Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow on the big screen.

Jessica Gao’s Black Widow/She-Hulk Team-Up

In a recent interview with Slash Film, Jessica Gao revealed She-Hulk wasn’t the first project she had pitched to Marvel, but it seems like her previous pitches led to her telling Jennifer Walters’ story.

“I was elated ’cause it was a dream job, But also, I’d been rejected by Marvel three times on previous projects. So, I was like, ‘I guess fourth time is the charm,'” Gao said of her previous interactions with Marvel Studios.

The Rick & Morty writer went on to reveal that one of her previous Marvel pitches was for a version of Black Widow that would have featured She-Hulk as a central character:

“The very first project that I pitched at Marvel was for the Black Widow movie. And I had She-Hulk in my pitch, but so much of She-Hulk in my pitch that somebody actually commented, ‘It kind of feels like you’re pitching a She-Hulk movie with Black Widow in it.’

“Clearly, there was a reason why I didn’t get that job. I really do believe that all of that was for a reason, because ultimately, at the end of the day, the thing that I really wanted was She-Hulk and those other projects weren’t She-Hulk.”

Despite not being chosen to write Black Widow, Jessica Gao and her enthusiasm for She-Hulk obviously made an impression at Marvel, securing her the role as head writer on the character’s current Disney Plus series.
