Is Simu Liu giving up on Shang-Chi? The actor reveals how long he plans to stick around the MCU as the long-awaited sequel continues to stall.
Shang-Chi was one of the true “hits” Marvel got out of its Multiverse Saga. The movie didn’t just make money, but it was well-received. It shot an unknown hero into the public consciousness and made Simu Liu a true blockbuster star. Fans thought that production on a sequel would be underway before ink on the contracts could even dry.
However, as most fans know, that sequel never came. Technically, a follow-up to Shang-Chi is in development. However, Marvel’s constant bouncing of director Destin Daniel Cretton from project to project has left the series high and dry. This has come much to the chagrin of Simu Liu, who has been very open about wanting a sequel.
Is Simu Liu Still Playing Shang-Chi?
Simu Liu was actually asked about his potential future in the MCU during a recent interview with Comicbook.com. Specifically, he was asked how many films he hopes to make as Shang-Chi even though his first sequel has been left at the starting line. Luckily for fans, the actor seems to be in it for the long haul.
“I would keep doing (Shang-Chi sequels) as long as I as I physically could.” Liu remarked. “I was just in like quite a large Marvel movie with a lot of these actors, some of whom have been playing the same role for like over 20 year. And I’m stepping into their world.”
“I’m stepping into their characters, who they’ve owned and honed and developed for so long. And it’s everything I can do just to like stop myself from shaking. But the thought that kind of powers me is this: you’ve still got to show up and you’ve got to try your best.”
“Try your best to get something usable in there and get out of your own way. I feel like a lot of times we use impostor syndrome or insecurity as an excuse not to show up.”
It’s good that, while Marvel seems to be allergic to the idea of making Shang-Chi a household name, Simu Liu seems to be all-in for the sequel- along with many, many more to come. Given how the character’s history is both so long and so shallow, it’ll be interesting to see how the hero evolves in the coming years as he becomes even more prominent in pop culture.
The Shang-Chi sequel is currently in development, and as such has no release date. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
