Simon Kinberg Reveals Major Mystique Twist In ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’

Simon Kinberg Mystique X-Men Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg revealed a twist involving Mystique’s parentage that makes a surprising change from the comics.

Although fans are still waiting to hear how Kevin Feige will introduce mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men veteran Simon Kinberg discussed a shocking twist in Mystique’s origin that deviates from the source material in a big way. Kinberg took part in IGN’s WFH Theater screening of X-Men: Days of Future Past, answering questions about the film and revealing new information about the mutant franchise. While the writer and director mentioned that he’d love to helm an X-Men film in the MCU, he offered a new twist in Mystique’s backstory.

During X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique goes after Bolivar Trask since he wants to police and fight mutants with his Sentinel project. One scene sees her looking through files at all the mutants he’s experimented on, including a shot of Jason Flemyng’s Azazel from X-Men: First Class. Comic readers will remember that Mystique and Azazel had a brief fling, which resulted in the birth of Nightcrawler. But interestingly, Simon Kinberg briefly explained that in the Fox films, Azazel is actually Mystique’s father, which is obviously a huge shift away from the comics. The writer didn’t mention who her mother was, or if there were originally plans to reveal their connection on-screen.

“There’s Azazel. Who we know is her dad, but she never gets to learn that.”

What do you think about the Mystique twist in X-Men: Days of Future Past? How do you think the MCU should introduce the team? Sound off in the comments below!

Here is the official synopsis for X-Men: Dark Phoenix:

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.

Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
