X-Men: Apocalypse was supposed to lead into Channing Tatum’s Gambit using the Mister Sinister tease in the post-credits scene.
Although Channing Tatum’s Gambit film will apparently never happen according to Doug Liman, X-Men Apocalypse was intended to lead into the solo adventure through its Mister Sinister tease. Fans will remember that at the end of Apocalypse, men in black suits retrieve a sample of Wolverine’s blood, placing it in an Essex Corp briefcase. X-Men fans quickly spotted the Mister Sinister reference, whose real name is Nathaniel Essex. But according to Simon Kinberg, this was meant to be followed up with Gambit.
During IGN’s WFH Theater screening of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Kinberg revealed that the Mister Sinister was going to be a part of Gambit. Although fans assumed the post-credits scene would lead to the team going up against the villain, it seems the Ragin’ Cajun would have met him in the solo film. Unfortunately Kinberg didn’t go into detail on what the plans for Mister Sinister involved, pointing out that the character is now owned by Disney.
“We had a tease of it at the end of Apocalypse. The Essex Corp is something that you see in a tag at the end of Apocalypse. We had talked about doing something with him, and I won’t get into the specifics of it since it’s no longer a 20th Century Fox property and now it’s part of the MCU. I have no idea what the plan is. But Mister Sinister was going to be part of the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum.”

Aside from the upcoming The New Mutants, which is said to be a total standalone, the final Fox-produced X-Men movie that was part of the shared universe was July’s Dark Phoenix. That movie’s premise is as follows:
This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic Dark Phoenix. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Dark Phoenix is now available on Digital HD, 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news surrounding the X-Men and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content in the future!
