Lucasfilm has reportedly reached a deal with X-Men veteran Simon Kinberg to develop a new Star Wars movie trilogy, according to Deadline. Kinberg will both write and produce the trilogy, collaborating with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. This news marks a major return to the Star Wars universe for Kinberg, who has previously worked on other projects within the franchise.
Deadline initially reported that Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy may continue the Skywalker Saga, comprising Episodes 10 to 12. However, this claim was later disputed by The Hollywood Reporter, who indicated that Kinberg’s new films will likely begin a fresh storyline, separate from the Skywalker saga, and introduce new characters to the Star Wars universe. However, characters from the Skywalker saga could still show up in Kinberg’s trilogy.
This new trilogy will reportedly join a lineup of Star Wars projects in development, with directors like James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover attached. While it’s unclear which of these projects are moving forward or remain in active development, Lucasfilm’s intent appears to be diversifying Star Wars storytelling by branching beyond the Skywalker saga.
