Are fans going to see a brand new Shang-Chi in Avengers: Doomsday? Simu Liu reveals how his iconic character has changed heading into the next film.
For all the faults that fans have had with the Multiverse Saga, it’s almost unanimously agreed that Shang-Chi was a true diamond in the rough. So while it’s a shame that Simu Liu’s hero has been sidelined in the franchise’s recent history, fans are excited to see him take up the role once more in Avengers: Doomsday later this year.
Simu Liu has been rather candid about working on the project, moreso than most other stars set to make their return in Avengers: Doomsday. During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Liu was asked how Shang-Chi may have changed heading into the upcoming film. And it seems the key difference that fans will see is confidence.
“I think time. He’s older. I think I’m older, so getting to bring a little bit more of a quality of self-assurance is always great, especially because Shang was such a fish out of water. There’s a little bit of a jump in time, so I think we’ll meet him at a place where he’s feeling a little more lived in with who he is and his responsibilities.”
Simu Liu’s Mistakes In Promoting Avengers: Doomsday
However, it seems as though Simu Liu isn’t happy with everything he’s said when trying to help promote Avengers: Doomsday. The star reflected on previous comments about Shang-Chi getting a new costume, and how small soundbites from a larger discussion can often be taken out of context in the modern age.
“I never know when something I say is going to get picked up into a soundbite. I think I was freezing cold on the rooftop of the Empire State Building, and they were like, ‘What about his costume?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, it’s new.’ It just became an unstoppable maelstrom of messed-up lines. I am very reserved about what to say about it now.”
Given promotion for Avengers: Doomsday is about to kick into high gear come February, it makes sense that Simu Liu would want to start tempering his language in preparation. Though, given how excited fans are to see Shang-Chi back on the silver screen, it’s likely the interviews are just going to keep on coming.
