Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum recently revealed that he missed out on a significant voice acting role in the highly-anticipated animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. The news comes in the wake of Amazon’s successful bid to revive the show, which was previously canceled by HBO Max.
Michael Rosenbaum, known for his portrayal of Lex Luthor in the hit Superman prequel series Smallville, discussed his recent struggles in securing voice acting roles during his podcast Inside of You. The 50-year-old actor specifically mentioned auditioning for Batman: Caped Crusader, expressing his enthusiasm for the opportunity to voice Bruce Wayne.
During the podcast episode, Michael Rosenbaum shared details of his Batman: Caped Crusader audition experience with his co-host Ryan Tellez. He revealed that he had auditioned for the titular superhero role and felt confident in his portrayal of Batman. According to Rosenbaum, J.J. Abrams and other producers were pleased with his performance as Batman. However, he sensed their dissatisfaction with his portrayal of Bruce Wayne, Batman’s alter-ego.
“We had another [audition], remember? The Batman series… It was J.J. Abrams and Bruce Timm who created Justice League: Unlimited. It got just axed, but I remember going for a callback with him and everybody. And you know, I think my Batman was really good. I think they were really happy with Batman, but the Bruce Wayne, I don’t think they were happy with. I could tell,” Rosenbaum revealed on the podcast.
The creators of Batman: Caped Crusader promise to take the titular comic book character back to his roots and explore the complex world of Gotham City. The DC Comics series is said to feature state-of-the-art animation and a darker, grittier tone than previous Batman cartoons.
What to expect from the new animated Batman series
Batman: Caped Crusader is created by a powerhouse trio of Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. Timm is a veteran of the Batman franchise, having previously worked on Batman: The Animated Series, which is widely considered to be one of the best animated shows of all time. Abrams and Reeves are also no strangers to the world of superheroes due to their work on the Star Wars sequel trilogy and The Batman, respectively.
Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves said the following about Amazon’s Batman: Caped Crusader revival from Amazon: “We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”
