Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum wants to reprise his role as Lex Luthor for the new DC Universe.

Michael Rosenbaum has expressed his interest in returning to the role of Lex Luthor for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe projects. Rosenbaum played the DC Comics villain across 154 episodes of the Superman prequel Smallvile, which wrapped up its ten-season run in 2011.

James Gunn and Michael Rosenbaum are close friends and have worked together on a number of projects over the past few years, with the most recent one being the Marvel Studios feature Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Gunn is currently writing the next Superman movie for Warner Bros. Discovery, but it’s unclear if its plot involves Lex Luthor. The project reportedly revolves around a younger version of Superman, taking place when he first arrives in Metropolis.

Michael Rosenbaum was given the opportunity to return as Lex Luthor in the five-part Arroweverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths, which revealed that his character became the President of the United States in the Smallville universe. The actor passed on the offer because Warner Bros. offered him no script or information on when he would be filming his scenes, among other reasons.

A new era for the DC Universe

Gunn is said to be focusing on the creative direction of the DCU while Safran is handling things that are related to business and production.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
