James Gunn has opened up about his plans for the DC Universe.
Earlier this year, James Gunn signed a four-year deal to run Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios division alongside Peter Safran, the producer behind the Aquaman and Shazam! movies. The newly-created division is in charge of WBD’s DC Entertainmeny assets, bringing them under one roof.
While responding to a fan on his official Twitter account, James Gunn revealed that four types of content making up the new DC Universe. As confirmed in his tweet, Gunn plans to create an interconnected universe consisting of film, telivision, animation and video game projects.
As for the comic book-side of things, James Gunn said that there is “very open communication” between himself and the folks at DC Entertainment. “As everyone knows I’m a huge comic book fan & I hope everything we do will lead to more people reading DC Comics (& vice versa). But Peter & I are not in charge of the comics – just all filmed DC entertainment,” Gunn wrote on Twitter.
A new era for the DC Universe
Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav recently teased that James Gunn and Peter Safran are closing to completing a multi-year roadmap for the DC Universe. Details regarding their plans are being kept under lock and key, but Gunn has shared a number of cryptic social media posts teasing that they involve Lobo and Mister Terrific, among other characters.
The latest DC Universe movie, Black Adam, is currently playing in theaters and has so far earned more than $350 million at the worldwide box office. Fans likely won’t see anything from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU plans until 2024 at the earliest. The next four DCU films — Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom — were overseen by DC’s previous regime, led by producer Walter Hamada, who is now at Paramount Pictures.
According to reports, James Gunn is expected to focus on the creative direction of the DC Universe while Peter Safran will handle business and production. They will report directly to Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav and collaborate with Warner Bros. Film Group co-heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.
