Is Sofia Falcone the key to The Batman? The season finale for The Penguin gives fans a major tease at the storyline being adapted in the upcoming sequel.

READERS BEWARE! Spoilers ahead for the season finale of The Penguin and potential spoilers for The Batman sequel.

The season finale for The Penguin will go down as one for the ages. It was full of harsh emotional beats, stunning twists, and fantastic payoffs. The killing of Vic broke the hearts of fans across the world, and Oz’s twisted reunion with his mother suggests a much more broken version of the character will appear in The Batman sequel.

However, the most important element The Penguin finale introduced when it came to speculation about The Batman sequel is the show’s final moments with Sofia Falcone. While adjusting back to her Arkham Asylum cell, Sofia receives a letter from Selina Kyle revealing herself to be the mobster’s half sister. This teased reunion between the two family members seems to suggest that The Batman Part II may end up adapting The Long Halloween.

How The Penguin Finale Sets Up The Batman: The Long Halloween

The reveal that Selina Kyle is related to Sofia Falcone is a key plot point in the events of Batman: Dark Victory, which serves as a retelling of Robin’s origin story. While many would assume The Penguin finale will serve to set up an adaptation of that comic, it’s important to note that Dark Victory is a sequel that relies heavily on The Long Halloween, which itself builds on the events of Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One.

By setting up the events of Dark Victory, The Penguin may have accidentally revealed Matt Reeves’ plans for The Batman trilogy. Given the first film seemed to take heavy inspiration from Batman: Year One, a sequel based on The Long Halloween leading into Dark Victory could serve as a perfectly grounded trilogy focused on the character’s early years. Of course, it would be far from the perfect adaptation due to the liberties taken with Sofia Falcone’s family members. Yet Cristin Milioti’s performance as the character is so strong, fans likely won’t mind substituting her for Carmine in the events of the coming sequels.
