Darth Maul Voice Actor Reveals What He Thinks ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Is Really About

Darth Maul Star Wars Solo

Sam Witwer, who has voiced various characters through Star Wars video games and TV shows, including Darth Maul on The Clone Wars and Solo: Star Wars Story, recently opened up about what he thinks Solo is actually about.

Even when the Star Wars franchise was faced with controversy after The Last Jedi hit theaters last December, fans were divided on what to think of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Leading up to the film’s release, some fans thought that the brand name would be enough to carry the film to box office success while others thought The Last Jedi had tainted the waters too much. At the worldwide box office, Solo raked in a gross of $392 million, which may sound like quite a bit but given the film’s massive budget after the re-shoots, it wasn’t the success that Disney was hoping for.

Now that the film has finally hit home video, fans can revisit Solo to give it another shot, or fans who had franchise fatigue by the time it hit theaters can watch it for the first time. According to Sam Witwer, who voiced Darth Maul in the film, a second viewing might give the film story a whole different context. While speaking with CinemaBlend recently, Witwer revealed what he thought Solo was actually about and it may put the titular character’s arc in a new context for some fans.

“It doesn’t occur to you the first time, but the second time you see the movie, that movie is really about Qi’ra trying to save Han Solo’s soul, because she knows he’s gonna follow her all the way to hell if he has the chance, so she has to break his heart. She has to keep him away from the darkest elements of the universe. She has to keep him firmly out of hell and ascending, which his trajectory as a character is to ascend, and she knows that.

But that ascendant quality that Han Solo has, that good guy quality could be corrupted and used in the opposite direction, because she knows where she’s going and she knows he doesn’t belong there. So if you want to really illustrate that, and you need to keep that criminal, dark side element in the background and keep it mysterious, then yes, it’s a smart move to use something that George Lucas had already established elsewhere and suddenly introduce that in there.”
