A sequel to Ben Schwarz’s Sonic the Hedgehog is slated to arrive in 2022 after the surprising success of Paramount’s video game adaptation.

After the surprising success of Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog video game adaptation, fans can look forward to seeing the speedster return to theaters in a sequel within the next few years. The family-friendly adventure managed to gross an impressive $146 million domestically while raking in $306 million worldwide – which is impressive given it couldn’t arrive in China due to the pandemic. The stars of the film already had ideas of what they’d like to see in the sequel, with James Marsden suggesting the sequel needs to include Sonic’s lovable side-kick, Tails.

During a reshuffling of other release dates, Paramount announced that the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel will arrive in theaters on April 8, 2021. After director Jeff Fowler’s comments earlier this year, it’s possible the film could springboard a Sonic cinematic universe. Given the video games have a large collection of characters like Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Rouge the Bat and of course, Shadow the Hedgehog – there’s plenty of directions the sequel could go.

Here is the official synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog:

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega that centres on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.

Directed by Jeff Fowler from a script written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel, the film features the voice talent of Ben Schwartz as the titular character and stars James Marsden as sheriff Tom Wachowski, Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Neal McDonough as US Army Major Bennington, Tika Sumpter as Mrs. Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Stone, and Frank C. Turner as Crazy Carl. Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Debs Howard, and Elfina Luk also star.
