Sony isn’t giving up yet! The studio confirms that they plan to reboot their universe of live-action films focused on Spider-Man’s villains.
It’s hard to make a connected universe of films. Films are expensive, and it takes a talented producer to keep projects consistent, while also remaining independent. Which is why Sony Pictures made history by producing six films focused on Spider-Man villains, with only half of them (specifically the ones focused on Venom) actually turning a profit. For fans and haters alike, it was a real life version of Charlie Brown trying to kick a football.
After Kraven The Hunter came out and only earned just over half of it’s production budget, many fans thought that the villain universe was done for good. This is especially as Sony Pictures themselves came out and said that they were stepping back on making live-action movies about Spider-Man’s rogues gallery.
Sony’s Villain Universe Is Back From The Dead
Yet fans should have known from Morbius being put back in the box office to flop twice that Sony Pictures isn’t content with only doing a bad idea once. Speaking on The Town with Matt Belloni, CEO Tom Rothman confirmed that they would continue making live-action movies without Spider-Man, and that their villain universe would be getting a reboot.
Some may question how the villain universe would be getting a reboot when none of the characters made each other, or even met Spider-Man. It’s a question the Sony Pictures head didn’t answer. However, given Secret Wars is just around the corner, it’s more likely than not that it’ll play some role in the new direction the studio has for the villain projects.
