Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner has responded to critics of the controversial eighth and final season of the acclaimed HBO series.
During an interview for TheWrap’s Down to the Wire issue of its Emmy magazine, Sophie Turner addressed the fact that the final season of Game of Thrones received mixed reactions from fans, leaving many disappointed with how certain stories and character arcs concluded. Some fans even expressed that they felt that the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss put minimal effort into the writing.
In the interview, Sophie Turner defended the effort that the writers, cast and crew put into bringing Game of Thrones season 8 to life. Here’s what Sophie Turner told TheWrap:
“The fans are incredible and so loyal, and we love them because of the fact that they’re so, so passionate. I cannot fault them there. But when people were saying that there was no effort, that the writers were terrible … The most effort was put into this final season. We were shooting for an incredibly long time, nearly 11 months. We did the most night shoots anyone has done ever, I think. I felt a little defensive, and I think I’m entitled to feel like that.”
In regards to how she had dreamed the series would end, Sophie Turner did have one thing she would’ve loved to see regarding a certain character’s demise:
“I thought Arya would kill Cersei. And I would like to have seen Sansa and Cersei reunited, or Arya and Cersei. But there were so many ways the story could have turned out. I felt very passionately about the ending for Sansa, and I was very happy with the ending that turned out for her.”
Sophie Turner is the latest member in the Game of Thrones cast that is defending the final season. Her fellow co-stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Nathalie Emmanuel also defended season 8 following the backlash from fans.
Despite the backlash, Game of Thrones earned a record-breaking 32 Emmy nominations, including Sophie Turner in the category for Best Supporting Actress – Drama.
