Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home saw characters from past Spider-Man franchises enter the MCU, but one nod to Spider-Man 2 had gone unnoticed until now.
Spider-Man: No Way Home saw the multiverse torn open after Peter Parker asked Doctor Strange to perform a spell that would make the world forget his secret identity, which was revealed by Mysterio at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. While this was the first time in cinematic history that Spider-Man’s true name was revealed to the world, it wasn’t the only time he had been unmasked in front of his fellow New Yorkers.
During Spider-Man 2‘s train sequence, which sees Peter trying to stop a runaway train, the hero loses his mask. When he finally succeeds in bringing the train to a halt, he passes out from the exertion, but the passengers catch him and carry him into the carriage. Seeing the unmasked Peter Parker lying before them, one man remarks “He’s just a kid. No older than my son.” It is this line which is echoed after Peter’s identity is revealed to the world in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
A new featurette from Collider confirms the Spider-Man 2 Easter egg, highlighting the moment Spider-Man jumps to MJ’s side after seeing the news bulletin that revealed his face and real name. As a crowd of onlookers swarm the couple, one man approaching Spider-Man can be heard saying “You’re just a kid?”. Check out the featurette below:
The No Way Home moment flips the original scene from Spider-Man 2 on its head – the civilians are no longer protecting Peter’s secret after he saved them, but rather are prying into his secret identity under the belief he is a criminal.
Here is the official synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:
