Was Bruce Campbell Really Going To Play Mysterio In ‘Spider Man 4’?

Spider-Man Bruce Campbell

Some mysteries do get resolved as Bruce Campbell finally addresses the rumors that he was going to play Mysterio in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 and the answer will probably disappoint you.

During a recent interview with Flickering Myth, Bruce Campbell talked a bit about Sam Raimi’s unmade fourth Spider-Man film. The rumor apparently started after an Access Hollywood report stated that Bruce Campbell would have a major role in the upcoming Spider-Man film. People began to speculate that the role would be that of Mysterio, especially after concept art leaked that showed. But apparently, much like Mysterio’s abilities, it was all a bunch of smoke and mirrors.

During the interviews, Bruce Campbell definitively put the nail in that rumor’s coffin:

“According to who? According to bullsh-t you read on the worldwide web of bullsh-t. No, that was a fanboy thing that started.”

Bruce Campbell reinforced this by saying that Sam Raimi never contacted him for such a role:

“Do you know Sam Raimi never sent, like, an email or a phone call saying, ‘Hey Bruce, uhh, prepping Spider-Man 4. What do you think about Mysterio?’ That conversation never happened.”

Some times these rumors take on a life of there own and we end up imagining things for unmade films that were, in all likelihood, never going to happen. Bruce Campbell definitively putting the nail in this rumor’s coffin just shows how the truth can sometimes crush these notions. But still, how much fun would it have been if he donned the iconic fishbowl? Shame how these things sometimes work out.
