Is Spider-Man 4 getting a complete overhaul? A new rumor suggests that the film is switching focus on the Sinister Six to a Mephisto storyline.

The rumor mill has been working overtime to find any news about Spider-Man 4 has production finally starts to ramp up. It seems that every week a new rumor comes out to contradict the last one, and that pattern doesn’t seem to be changing now. The hottest scoop fresh off the presses from The Beyond Reporter revealed that the long-awaited sequel’s script focused on Tom Holland’s webhead facing off against the Sinister Six.

At least…it did. The rumor would go on to state that this Sinister Six storyline was ultimately axed. While Spider-Man 4 still doesn’t have a script, the studio does seem to have an idea of where they want to go with the project. Specifically, the new focus for the sequel seems to have Mephisto as the main villain with Ghost Rider serving as a supporting character, similar to how Doctor Strange and Nick Fury have appeared in Tom Holland’s past projects.

Mephisto’s Storyline For Spider-Man 4

The Sinister Six may be the most consistently recognizable team in Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, but Mephisto is the face of one of the most infamous stories in all of comics. If this rumor turns out to be true, it seems that Marvel is angling Spider-Man 4 to be an adaptation of One More Day. It’s a storyline with a lot of legs to run with when it comes to a feature film, but it’ll need to be something truly exceptional to make sure Tom Holland’s sequel doesn’t flop like the comic event.

Of course, both a Sinister Six movie and one revolving around Mephisto would serve to disappoint fans who hoped Spider-Man 4 would bring Tom Holland’s hero down to the street level. Though given how much money Spider-Man: No Way Home made at the box office, it was never likely that Marvel was going to leave money on the table by not escalating the stakes of the film to a multiversal level once more.
