Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse nearly had a whole new ending! A new interview has revealed that the movie’s final scenes were added mere weeks before its release in theaters.
The ending of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse blew fans away, teasing an epic follow-up to one of the best-animated sequels of all time with Gwen Stacy forming her own Spider-Team. However, according to the film’s directors, those scenes were only added weeks before release.
“Initially in Earth 42 at the end, that Miles wasn’t the Prowler, remember?” Director Kemp Powers tells Collider. “We had even designed the character quite differently, and it was fairly late in the game and we were kind of doing an audience review and we started texting one another during the review, and I felt so guilty because it was like, ‘Oh my god, the character designers are gonna have to redo this character because wouldn’t it be great if he was the Prowler in this universe?’ [Laughs]”
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse was reportedly a behind-the-scenes nightmare thanks to extreme crunch periods, with this change being only one of many made to the film right before it premiered. While the movie surely benefitted from that change in the ending, fans should be aware of the blood, sweat, and tears animators put into their favorite films.
Why a live-action version of Spider-Verse makes sense
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and its predecessor Into the Spider-Verse have quickly turned The Prowler into a favorite villain among fans. A cameo by Donald Glover in the now iconic role, an identity first teased back in Spider-Man: Homecoming, made theaters across the world erupt in cheers.
Miles Morales has also exploded in popularity over the last few years, with many fans considering him the definitive Spider-Man over even Peter Parker. The legacy of a character created by a simple gag with Donald Glover’s character is astonishing to see, especially given the acclaim of the Spider-Verse franchise. So while fans may not see Glover as a live-action version of the character anytime soon, it’s certain he’ll bolster the potential film as much as he can as the Prowler.
