‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Confirmed To Be ‘Street Level’ Alongside New Details About The Punisher’s Role

The Punisher is here!

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shaping up better than expected! The film will bring a new take to The Punisher while also keeping the web-head a street level hero.

While hindsight is 20/20, it can also be like milk. Time can serve to sour even the most fun experiences in the moment, revealing all the wrinkles fans ignored the first time. And over the past few years, that souring has taken form around Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy. Fans lament how connected the projects felt to the wider Marvel universe, wishing to return to the days of the hero being a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Surprisingly, it seems as though that sentiment is being taken to heart with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. After months of rumors about Mephisto and Knull, a grounded Spider-Man story was seemingly confirmed was Jon Bernthal was brought on-board the project as The Punisher. Speaking on this decision at a round table with CBR, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige reveals that the film is set to fulfill the promise teased at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“I think there’s a promise at the end of No Way Home that, for as sad as it is, that Peter is forgotten by everyone in his life. We are seeing for the first time in the Tom Holland Spider-Man stories, him being a proper Spider-Man. Him being, by himself, dedicated to saving the city, and dealing with- for lack of a better term- street level crime as opposed to world-ending events that he faced when working with the other characters.”

The Punisher’s Role In Spider-Man 4

Kevin Feige would continue to speak about the lower stakes in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, putting particular emphasis on The Punisher. The producer remarked that the anti-hero will have a “different tonality” in his shift to the silver screen. However, director Destin Daniel Cretton seems to be putting in the effort to ensure it stays true to the comics.

So when you do that, you say, ‘OK, who are the other street level characters that we’ve never seen him interact with?’ And of course, I love that the Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic, and that great cover.”

“I don’t wanna say too much, but I will say too much. Destin is doing an amazing job right now on that movie. It starts shooting very soon, and he’s got 8 or 9 comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie. It’s super cool.”

Given how tonally different The Punisher is to the MCU’s current take on Peter Parker, it’ll be interesting to see how the two interact in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With the project filming in a matter of weeks, set photos and production details are likely to begin hitting the rumor mill. Fans should enjoy this period of rampant speculation while it lasts!
