The leak ruined plans.

The folks behind the record-breaking Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer had to put in major crunch time after it was leaked online.

Marvel Studios has had some big leaks, but perhaps the biggest leak in the last few years was the entire Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer dropping late last year. Even though the VFX clearly wasn’t finished, with visible blue screens in the footage spread online, that didn’t stop the internet from absolutely shredding the early peek.

A lot of these complaints were completely absent when the official trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped. However, it seems as though the perfected VFX came at a cost. One member of the VFX team made a post reflecting on how the trailer came to life. And while he had nothing but praise for his experience, it seems he and his team experienced some major crunch to get the footage ready for release.

“Due to some changes in the previous version of the trailer, the team had to urgently remake a new version within a very short time. In order to release it today, the entire project directly entered ‘runaway mode.’ Everyone voluntarily worked overtime, weekends were reduced by half, and everyone was constantly synchronizing the progress.”

Marvel’s History Of VFX Crunch

This incident involving the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t the first time that Marvel Studios has been called out for using crunch time on their projects. Marvel is notorious for their quick turnaround times, meaning they generally hire a TON of VFX artists to get work done at double or triple the speed it would normally take.

This doesn’t mean Sony Pictures is completely innocent when it comes to crunch. Aside from their involvement with the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, the studio notoriously allowed crunch time on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse so that the project could meet its announced release date.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters July 31st, 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Spider-Man’s Marvel Cinematic Universe future!
