A new live-action television series revolving around the Spider-Man character, Silk, is in development at Sony Picture Television.
Since Sony made its deal with Marvel to include Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the company has been trying to branch out the franchise as far as possible with mixed successes. Venom, for example, was panned by critics but grossed well over $800M worldwide on what was reported to be a$100M budget. A sequel is currently being produced with a Morbius film also being made. But now it seems that Sony wants to branch the Spider-Man franchise into television with a live-action Silk series.
First appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #1, Cindy Moon, or Silk was created by longtime Spider-Man writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos in 2014. In the comics, the spider that first bit Peter Parker managed to crawl off the iconic wall-crawler and managed to bite Silk before dying, giving her spider-based powers as well. Eventually, Silk got her own book and has remained a major character in the Spider-Man side of Marvel ever since. But now Sony is ready to bring her into live-action.
According to a report from Variety, the upcoming Silk series has longtime Spider-Man producer Amy Paskel and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller on board as executive producers. Lauren Moon in talks to write the upcoming series. While no network or streaming service has been attached to the project, sources are saying that Amazon Prime will be the Silk series likely home.
