Visitors to the Avengers Campus theme park at Disney California Adventure were shocked yesterday, when the park’s acrobatic Spider-Man robot malfunctioned and crashed into a building.
One of Disney’s flashiest new animatronic, the Stuntronics Spider-Man robot can be seen in a short show that is regularly performed at Avengers Campus. While the show starts with a cast member playing Spider-Man on the park’s rooftops, when the performer moves out of sight, the robot takes their place. This animatronic Spider-Man swings through the air, leaping with realisitic airborne movements onto the roof of the park’s Web Slingers attraction.
At least, that’s what’s supposed to happen. Guests recently got a glimpse of what it looks like when Disney’s innovative technology lets them down.
His Spider-Sense Must Have Been Tingling
In videos posted on Instagram by user “mdglee_szm,” the robot Spider-Man can be seen swinging through the air high above Avengers Campus… only to remain rigidly in position and come crashing down into the building opposite. It looks like Spidey took a chunk out of the wall, but it wasn’t anything Disney hadn’t planned for.
When it’s clear something’s not right in Spider-Man’s swinging, the music shifts and the voiceover between Spider-Man and his AI assistant Karen responds appropriately. “Karen, airbags please!” the wall-crawler yells. After he crashes, Karen can be heard responding “The Web facility is not equipped with airbags,” to which Spidey manages a strained “Okay.” Check it out below:
Disney’s Imagineers are obviously well aware that even the most finely tuned technology is prone to the occasional issue and, not wanting Spidey’s less-than-perfect landing to disrupt anyone’s immersion in the world of Avengers Campus, a few malfunction-appropriate dialogue options have been pre-programmed into the system.
Spider-Man can be seen swinging a little more successfully in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Here is the official synopsis:
For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.
