Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland recently revealed that he’s been entirely sober this past year. In a new interview, the actor opened up about his struggles with alcoholism, which led him to cut alcohol from his life entirely.
It’s been no secret that Tom Holland went sober, though the actor has mostly kept the reasons why close to his chest. During a recent interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the Spider-Man star opened up about the Dry January, a tradition in the UK and Ireland of not drinking in the month of January, that got him clean:
“All I could think about was having a drink. It really scared me. I just was like, ‘Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing,'” Holland Explained “I felt like I couldn’t be social. I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling. I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”
This realization led Tom Holland to extending his sober streak beyond the Dry January most Brits commit to. However, the Spider-Man star eventually realized that he was better off in a life without alcohol:
“[I was] the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter… I just sort of said to myself, like, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?’”
Struggling with sobriety is no easy feat, and hundreds of actors deal with substance abuse issues each year due to the stresses of fame and their job. It’s commendable that Tom Holland wasn’t just able to break the cycle for himself, but was able to speak so openly about his experience despite playing one of the biggest heroes in the world as Spider-Man.
