Spider-Punk is getting his own movie! The latest report revealed that Daniel Kaluuya will return to the character as the co-writer for the upcoming animated spin-off.
While there was a lot to praise about Spider-Man: Across to Spider-Verse, perhaps no element got the fans as riled up as Hobie Brown, aka the Spider-Punk. The character, played by Daniel Kaluuya, was endlessly charming and animated in a truly unique art style. Following the film’s release, fans were immediately speculating about role he could play in the (still unreleased) sequel.
However, some fans took their hopes a step forward. With Sony’s live-action Spider-Man films floundering at the box office, speculation began to mount that the studio would focus on creating animated projects, potentially including a spin-off of the Spider-Verse franchise. Daniel Kaluuya’s Spider-Punk quickly climbed to the top of many fans’ wishlist, even if most didn’t expect the concept to ever turn into a reality.
Spider-Punk Gets An Animated Spin-Off
Yet sometimes dreams really do come true! A recent report from Deadline reveals that an animated spin-off focusing on Spider-Punk is officially in development at Sony Pictures. While Daniel Kaluuya has yet to be confirmed to voice the character, he will serve as co-writer for the project alongside Ajon Singh, best known for his work on the upcoming project Primetime.
Currently, it’s unclear if the Spider-Punk film will be a direct spin-off of the Spider-Verse franchise, or if the project will exist in its own animated continuity. Either way, it’ll likely be some time before fans see Daniel Kaluuya return as Hobie Brown in his own film. Given how intensive the character was to animate in his few scenes in Across the Spider-Verse, it’s not likely this film will release anytime before 2030, if not reaching beyond that point.
