Perhaps no announcement was more exciting to fans than the Star Wars Celebration reveal that Logan director James Mangold would be helming a film set during the Dawn of the Jedi. While details have been kept mostly under wraps, Mangold has shared his hopes for joining the Star Wars saga and how the film will be an origin story for the force.
When James Mangold’s Star Wars project was first announced, fans were shocked when it was revealed it would take place in a brand new segment of the mythos before the Old Republic, known as the Dawn of the Jedi. While fans were teased that the film would be set 25,000 years ago and focus on the first Jedi to use the Force, it wasn’t exactly clear what that meant. Luckily, the Logan director has revealed what attracted him to the project and his goal to make the “Ten Commandments” of the Force:
“For me, it’s about, I want to be part of the saga, but I also don’t want to be holding so much lore in the air that you can hardly tell a story,” Mangold tells Gizmodo. “And what I really wanted to do, what I told her, was just can we make a kind of the Ten Commandments of the Force, you know? A kind of origin story of how the Force came to be known, understood, wielded, and harnessed.”
Since James Mangold likely doesn’t want to get tangled up in lore, it’s unlikely fans will be seeing Star Wars Legends content like the Tythans who founded the Jedi order after the Force Wars or even canon aspects like the Wellspring of Life that acts as the source of midi-chlorians. Despite this, Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny prove that Mangold has the experience to reinvent classic character for modern tastes. Whatever story he has in mind is sure to be one wholly unique in the galaxy far, far away.
