'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Director Rian Johnson reveals the name of a new planet and shared details on the location's role in the film.

Today the first official trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was finally released and fans have responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. While the trailer featured many moments to analyze and discuss, fans quickly took notice of a mysterious new planet, prompting viewers to wonder what the name of the location will be and what role it will play in the film. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Rian Johnson shared details on the new planet and revealed that it will be named Crait.

Johnson offered small details on the new world’s purpose.

“It’s way out there. It’s uncharted. It’s a mineral planet and so there are mines on it.”

Johnson revealed that the planet had a previous role.

“[It’s] an old rebel base there that’s now abandoned.”

While slim on the details, Johnson discussed a moment involving the planet that will be featured in the film.

“It ends up playing a key role in the movie. [The Resistance fighters] show up where they have to deal with a very pressing and immediate.”
