‘Star Wars’ Writer Lawrence Kasdan Says ‘The Studio Blew It’ With ‘Solo’

Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Lawrence Kasdan commented on the disappointing box office performance of the film.

After Rogue One, Disney and Lucasfilm continued their line-up of Star Wars anthology films with a prequel centered on a young Han Solo. To pen the script, Lucasfilm recruited Star Wars veteran Lawrence Kasdan, who previously co-wrote the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

While Lawrence Kasdan initially had no interest in returning to the Star Wars franchise, he was convinced after realizing a spin-off centered on his favorite character, Han Solo, was in the works. However, Solo underperformed at the box office upon its release and Lawrence Kasdan seemed to place the blame on the studio while speaking at the Austin Film Festival:

“Then the studio blew it. But that’s not unusual.”

While Lucasfilm had hoped Lawrence Kasdan would continue working on Star Wars to the point of sending him a script via messenger, the Solo writer noted that he is not interested in the franchise anymore. However, Lawrence Kasdan added that he is aware of how fortunate he is to be in a position where he is being sought to write Star Wars films:

“Don’t think for a second I don’t know how lucky I am that they’re sending a Star Wars script to my door and I can say, ‘No, I won’t accept it.’ You have to be in a very privileged situation to do that, and I don’t ever take that for granted.”

How do you feel about Solo: A Star Wars Story? Is Lawrence Kasdan right to seemingly blame the studio for how it performed? Let us know your thoughts below!
