Star Wars Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni has revealed Maul was originally set to meet his demise at the hands of Darth Vader during the season 2 finale of the series last year.

Maul is about to face off against Ben Kenobi in a rematch for the ages in the episode “Twin Suns” this Saturday. But in a recent chat with io9, Filoni divulged it almost didn’t happen as he disclosed that Maul was initially set to appear only once in the series. The character was originally going to die in a duel with Darth Vader in the episode that saw the Sith Lord come face to face with his former apprentice, Ahsoka Tano:

“Originally Maul perished in the season two finale where he returned. It was a one-off appearance. So originally in that episode you were gonna get Vader fighting Maul, Vader would have killed Maul, and then fought Ahsoka… It just became unwieldy. There were too many storylines, and there isn’t enough emotional material between Vader and Maul. It’s more of a fan fiction fun thought that they fought. The emotional drama was really between Vader and Ahsoka. So we decided to let Maul live.”

Star Wars Rebels was created by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sherlock Holmes), and Carrie Beck.

The series features the voice cast of Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex, David Oyelowo as Agent Kallus, Sam Witwer as Maul and Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Star Wars Rebels airs Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on Disney XD.
