Industrial Light and Magic chief creative officer and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story executive producer John Knoll has revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he has another idea for a Star Wars spin-off film.
Knoll himself, conceived of the story for the first ever spin-off in the franchise and pitched the story as SEAL Team Six going on a desperate mission to steal the Death Star plans from the heart of the military industrial complex of the Empire to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy after the production company was acquired by Disney in 2012.
The producer presented a look back at the work on last year’s Rogue One in a Rogue One Super Session during the National Association of Broadcasters Show on Wednesday when he teased that he has a new idea for another spin-off in the works:
“I have another idea I’ve been tinkering with. It’s maybe 75 percent there. I haven’t pitched it to [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy]. It’s another Star Wars thing.”
Knoll went on to add that after Disney’s four-billion-dollar acquisition of Lucasfilm, he doesn’t see the company ceasing production of Star Wars films anytime soon as long as both quality and interest in the franchise remain high:
“There’s no reason to think Disney is going to stop wanting to make Star Wars movies if there’s quality and there’s interest. It has unlimited potential. It has a huge number of characters, worlds … It’s a massive playground.”
The timing for Knoll to pitch another spin-off story may be perfect as President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed that by the end of 2017 the company will have begun to map out the future of the Star Wars franchise beyond the sequel trilogy.
As of now, Lucasfilm will release Star Wars: The Last Jedi this holiday season on December 15, 2017. Following Episode VIII will be the second ever spin-off with The Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story which is slated for release on May 25, 2018. The franchise will then close out the sequel trilogy one year later with the ninth chapter of the Skywalker saga when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters May 24, 2019.
