A brand new piece of concept art from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has given us an early look at Dark Rey’s design.
Despite what the filmmakers probably intentioned, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has ended up as the franchises’ most divisive entry due to its extremely controversial choices, as well as its constant sense of retreading and retconning. One aspect of the film that was particularly praised was Rey seeing herself as a part of the dark side in a vision. The allegiance switch was briefly teased in a trailer and was given a bit of time in the film, though it certainly would have been great to see a more villainous Rey.
Concept artist Adam Brockbank, who worked on the final film in the Skywalker saga, gave fans a look at an early design for Dark Rey on Instagram.
In the concept art, the Star Wars character is seen in total Sith mode, rocking a black robe with a cowl that is shielding half her face. Rey’s eyes are also strikingly yellow, similar to Darth Maul’s. The character’s face looks extremely weary and drained, a symptom of being in the Sith clan. Beside the character are rocks floating, showcasing the Star Wars character’s vibration frequencies.
The early design is certainly an inspired take as it truly shows the pleasant and inherently good Rey in a more vulnerable and toxic state. In the film, the villainous alter-ego’s face was missing the weariness, though she was rocking large fangs that were perfect for hissing. This early design is notably missing Dark Rey’s awesome switch-blade like dual lightsaber that was seen in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but that may have been a late addition to the character.
