‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer In Talks To Helm ‘The Dirty Dozen’ Remake

Suicide Squad David Ayer Dirty Dozen

The Hollywood Reporter notes Suicide Squad director David Ayer is in talks to helm a remake of The Dirty Dozen for Warner Bros.

After working with Warner Bros. on Suicide Squad three years ago, David Ayer is now in negotiations to write and direct a remake of the classic film The Dirty Dozen for the studio. Produced by Simon Kinberg, David Ayer’s Dirty Dozen remake will update the original film by changing the World II setting and telling a contemporary story.

Released in 1976 and directed by Robert Aldrich, The Dirty Dozen told the story of a group of army convicts who are coerced into embarking on a mission to take out Nazi officials. Nominated for four Academy Awards and winning in the Best Sound Effects category, The Dirty Dozen is often credited with setting the template for films about morally questionable characters taking part in deadly missions. In fact, David Ayer previously pointed to The Dirty Dozen as a source of inspiration for Suicide Squad.

Here is the official synopsis for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad:

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity.

U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, and Cara Delevingne.
