Suicide Squad director David Ayer recently gave fans some brand new details about Joker and Harley Quinn’s relationship.

One of the most interesting parts about Suicide Squad was how it showcased the tumultuous relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn. David Ayer’s film was the first time both characters had been on the big screen together, so it was important that Suicide Squad demonstrated just how rocky their relationship is.

Since the film’s 2016 release, director David Ayer has maintained a positive relationship with fans on Twitter and has always been great about answering questions that they might have. Over the weekend, the Suicide Squad director revealed brand new details regarding Harley Quinn and Joker’s relationship when prompted by fans on the social media platform.

In the film, Jared Leto’s character is seen maniacally laughing with a circle of knives around him. The scene became popular online and is quite synonymous with the rendition of the character. Once you look past the knives, you see that the Joker’s warped circle also features baby clothes. Director David Ayer clarified why Harley Quinn’s beau had baby clothes on hand and it’s far more interesting than you could possibly imagine.

Joker and Harley Quinn certainly don’t have the most positive relationship in Suicide Squad, which is why that circle is so effective in showcasing how the Clown Prince of Crime sees his significant other. Another fan asked David Ayer why a smile was outlined around Joker’s lips in that same scene. The Suicide Squad director followed up by doubling down on how heartbreaking the relationship between the two is.

This scene is essentially Jared Leto’s Joker trying to fill the void of Harley Quinn, which is not something we got during the first time we saw it in Suicide Squad. However, it makes complete sense as Harley Quinn and Joker weren’t on screen together for a huge portion of the David Ayer film’s runtime. In fact, a lot of the scenes involving Joker focused on him trying to find Harley Quinn, with him ultimately reducing her at the end of the film. Currently, Harley Quinn and Joker aren’t seeing each other anymore as the Margot Robbie character broke up with gangster in the recently released Birds of Prey, which serves as a continuation of sorts to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.
