David Ayer revealed he could have directed the Suicide Squad sequel.

Director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad debuted to mixed reviews but proved to be a financial success at the box office. Nonetheless, Warner Bros. and DC opted to move in a different direction with the supervillain team and recruited James Gunn to helm a second film.

While many believed this meant that David Ayer wasn’t asked back to helm a Suicide Squad sequel, the filmmaker debunked this notion in a post on his Twitter account. In response to a fan’s question on the matter, Ayer revealed that he had the choice to direct a Suicide Squad sequel, but he ultimately decided to work on Birds of Prey, a project he produced with director Cathy Yan.
