Supergirl star Nicole Maines wants to see more transgender characters in the industry portrayed as flawed people.
Nicole Maines made history on Supergirl, portraying the first live-action transgender superhero character. First appearing in the show’s fourth season, Nichole Maines portrayed Nia Nal/Dreamer and has been part of the main cast ever since. However, the actress thinks that a character like Dreamer is just the beginning and wants to see more flawed transgender characters appear on screen.
While talking to Variety, the Supergirl star expressed her desire to have less than perfect transgender characters appear on screen that could range to jerks to flat out villains. She also hammered in the point that people who are transgender are people and are not identified just by this:
“I think it’s that more and more trans characters [can] be less than perfect and be a–holes and be the villains. We can look at them, and be like, ‘They’re just people. They make poor choices. They can be bad people. They can be not nice.’ Trans-ness is not a person. A person is not identified by their trans-ness.”
