‘Supergirl’ Season 2: What We Know So Far

After a first season that improved perhaps faster than any other TV show I've seen in recent years, Supergirl is gearing up for its second season, with a change of networks from CBS to the CW, where it will join other DC shows Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. There are a lot of things to look forward to about the show's return, with lots still to be resolved from Season 1, with one particular cliffhanger in mind. Thankfully, we only have one more week to wait to find out the answers to our burning questions. So with that in mind, just like we did with The Flash and Arrow, we're going to be breaking down what we know so far about Supergirl Season 2. So, hit next to find out what you have waiting in store for you next Monday.

Supergirl crossover

#10 - Supergirl Joins The Arrowverse

The placing of this at #10 should tell you how much awesome stuff Season 2 of Supergirl promises us, or that the writer of this article hasn't ordered the list at all. It's probably the latter. Anyway, while CBS cancelled the show after its first season, the CW picked it up straight away. This means that Supergirl will now be airing on the same channel as Arrow, Flash and Legends, meaning we can expect to see the Girl of Steel crossover with the other DCTV heroes. While we did get a Flash crossover last season, this year will see more crossover's, meaning Supergirl will meet the likes of the Green Arrow, Captain Rip Hunter and Kid Flash. The fact that production has also moved to Vancouver, while having some negative effects (more on that later), does mean crossovers are logistically easier for the show as well. We already have two crossover's confirmed, a two-part musical crossover with The Flash in the back half of the season, and the annual crossover, which is now a 4-part crossover with Arrow, Flash and Legends. The crossover has already begun filming on Arrow, with Stephen Amell sharing the first photo of the Green Arrow and Supergirl together. We know the crossover will be kicked off by Supergirl, and that the villains will be the Dominators. This crossover event should also explain how Supergirl's Earth is joined with the Earth-One of the Arrowverse. You can also check out Superhero Fight Club 2.0 on the CW App, which features Supergirl teaming up with other DCTV heroes in a sequel to last year's Superhero Fight Club.

#9 - Meeting Who Was In The Pod

Season 1 ended on a mega cliffhanger. A Kryptonian pod crash landed on Earth, and Supergirl opened it to be shocked by what she saw inside. What exactly that was however, was left to the Season 2 premiere to reveal. That is until the producers announced it was Chris Wood playing Mon-El. Wood will be a series regular, meaning we can expect plenty of him, and it will be interesting to see how Kara and the rest of the DEO react to a new alien on Earth. Whether Mon-El will be a goodie or baddie is currently unknown, though considering he was a member of the Legion of Superheroes in the comics, and the fact we've seen Legion rings teased in both Supergirl and other Arrowverse shows, his arrival could mean more for Supergirl than one might think.

Supergirl cat

#8 - Kara's New Job

At the end of Season 1 Cat offered Kara a new office, and a new job (but no pay raise). However, Cat decided to let Kara shape her job to something she wanted to do, meaning we don't know what Kara's new role at CatCo will be. However, we do know that with production moving to Vancouver, Calista Flockhart will no longer be a series regular on the show, but instead will appear as a recurring character. Could this mean Kara's job will involve running CatCo in some shape or form? Unlikely, seeing as Ian Gomez has been cast as Snapper Carr, the new Editor-In-Chief at CatCo.

#7 - Kevin Smith Will Direct An Episode

After a hugely successful turn at directing an episode of The Flash last season, Kevin Smith is back to the Arrowverse twice this year, not only returning to direct episode 7 of The Flash but also an episode of Supergirl. Set to start filming towards the end of this month, little is known about Smith's episode, other than the title - 'Supergirl Lives' - a play on words of his Superman movie that never got going. Considering the stormer of an episode he produced for The Flash, we have plenty to look forward to.

#6 - Lynda Carter Will Be The President

Near the end of Season 1, we were teased that the President is a fan of Supergirl, and behind the scenes interviews revealed that the showrunners wanted Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, for the role. It was soon confirmed that deals had been worked out, and that Carter would indeed play the President of the United States during Season 2. This is great news for fans, as Supergirl continues its practice of casting DC alumni, with Carter joining the likes of Helen Slater, Dean Cain and Laura Vandervoort.

#5 - New Villains

While not a huge amount is known about the antagonists of Supergirl Season 2, we do have some confirmed, and heavily rumoured, villains to look forward to. We know John Corben/Metallo will appear as the villain of the first two episodes, being a threat big enough to get Supergirl to team up with her cousin (more on this later). A behind the scenes set pic also revealed a look at Dichen Lachman, whose look heavily resembled that of Roulette from the comics. We know Lena Luthor, sister of Lex, will be on the show, as portrayed by Merlin's Katie McGrath, but whether she is hero or villain is currently unknown, and will be probably be a big focus on her character. The chances of Maxwell Lord returning are high, especially when considering our last look at him in Season 1. Mon-El is in a similar situation to Lena Luthor in that we don't know if he will be friend or foe.

Supergirl maggiesawyer

#4 - Maggie Sawyer

Season 1 saw Supergirl team up with the likes of Martian Manhunter and The Flash. Season 2 will see even more heroes, both with superpowers and without, join Kara. Floriana Lima (Lethal Weapon) will be joining the show as a series regular in the role of Detective Maggie Sawyer, a famous LGBT character from the comics. Sawyer will be a member of the Science Police, and be pro-Alien.

Supergirl martians

#3 - Miss Martian

With the great twist of Hank Henshaw actually being The Martian Manhunter, fans (especially myself) couldn't wait to see the show explore more of the Martian Manhunter's comic book history, including his allies. While Season 1 did a good job of filling us in on Manhunter's backstory, with an episode featuring potently horrific scenes of Mars, Season 2 is looking to expand the Martian mythology even further with the introduction of J'onn J'onnz's niece, Miss Martian. She will be played by Sharon Leal, and we may have had a glimpse of her in the trailer (which is embedded at the end of this article).

Supergirl cadmus

#2 - Cadmus

Season 1 teased us with Cadmus Labs. Season 2 will deliver Cadmus Labs. A place that experiments on aliens and humans alike, Cadmus is currently set up to be the Big Bad of Supergirl's second year, and I'm hoping this will be the case, as the show needs a much stronger main antagonist than Season 1 had. Jeremiah Danvers, Kara's adoptive father, is currently being held up in Cadmus after being thought dead for many years. We also know that Cadmus will be the ones to turn the assassin John Corben we meet in Episode 1 into the supervillain Metallo we'll meet in Episode 2.

Supergirl superman

#1 - Superman

Could it be anything else but Superman at number 1? After an entire season of mentions, quick glimpses, and messenger conversations, the Man of Steel himself will be joining the show. Currently only confirmed for the first two episodes, Tyler Hoechlin is set to play Kara's cousin, and from what we've seen so far I'm really looking forward to it. While there have been criticisms of Hoechlin's figure, as well as his costume, I think we should remember that Gal Gadot faced similar criticisms when announced as Wonder Woman for the DCEU, and she knocked the role out the park (though I haven't yet see anyone say Hoechlin's breasts are too small).
